The Hine Ladies series

The Hine Ladies is a work designed by Jamie Lambert & Aroha Terekia to epitomise the different characteristics of wāhine Māori in this everchanging world.  Each of the Hine Ladies have their own characteristics and elements that exist in every individual wahine.  They represent the different features that women must present in different circumstances each of them come to the forefront.  They are interconnected, they are unified, they are she, and she is we.

Hinengaro

Hinengaro, she represents hidden potential, unrealised possibilities and symbolises inner strength. The name Hinengaro is the potential of wāhine Māori and their essence to rise to the occasion despite adversity. Hinengaro celebrates the beauty of matriarchal heritage as she is elevated to the fore front when required. All that one needs is inherent within you because you come from a prestigious line of chiefs.

Hinewairua

Hinewairua characterises the spiritual quintessence of a woman. The soulful nature of wāhine Māori is Hinewairua as she guides our journey through this life. The spiritual essence is nurtured through the signposts, reminders, and lessons coupled with pure love on a soulful frequency. Hinewairua celebrates spirituality in all its splendor as she is elevated to the forefront when required.

Hinekaiaia

Hinekaiaia (she who is hawklike) she embodies the ascent of a woman in the physical realm. Hinekaiaia is the embodiment of wāhine Māori that continue to rise to the occasion in challenging times and continual lessons. Each time she rises with esteem and admiration for who she is and where she has come from. Gratitude and reverence is celebrated as a foundation of resilience as she is elevated to the forefront when required.

Hine i te ao mārama

Hine i te ao mārama — she who comes from the light. The light is energy that cultivates and matures confidence to propel aspirational potential. She is the culmination of whakapapa lines, of character filled whānau and has the ability to make aspirations become a reality. She is ambitious for collective gain, motivated by pure love, and inspired by future hopefulness. Hine i te ao mārama is a reminder that when we are searching for the light in others, that WE are in fact the light. We have the ability to light our own paths.
